Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
