The artist has donated the full amount of his £25,000 honor winnings to the MVT, which operates to preserve the Britain's grassroots live music spots.

The star was awarded the prize on 16 October as his third album People Watching was declared the best record of the previous year.

He has chosen to hand the money over to the MVT, in appreciation of the vital role local spots played in his initial steps.

"I personally wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the performances I did around the region, and further afield, when I was just getting going," remarked Sam Fender. "These spaces are legendary, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these spaces have shut down – roughly 16% of the total UK scene.

In the last year, top acts like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by applying a modest fee to their admission fees, which supports smaller concert halls.

Fender also took part, raising more than £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to support 38 grassroots venues across the UK.

The donation assisted spaces that were dealing with imminent closure due to challenges stemming from flooding, fires and bereavements, as well as permit problems, conflicts and sound issues.

Some locations received monetary aid in upgrading amenities and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted musicians and concertgoers.

"The concept that money from concerts in large arenas backs the independent spots, where it all starts for artists like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has said.

Fender is not the first artist to contribute his Mercury Prize winnings to charitable organizations.

Back when the band received the award in the year 1996 for their album Different Class, frontman the singer declared that the band would give their winnings to the charity the charity.

In 2002, musician the artist divided her bounty between a few charities, such as the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I gave a £1,000 to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was a child and they lacked better apparatus," the artist explained to the media.

In recent years, Ezra Collective contributed their funds to the youth organization that nurtured their group, as well as other local music groups.

Also 1994 winners they gave their winnings to a multiple sclerosis charity after a close contact was identified with the condition.

"Receiving the award was ample," stated singer the singer. "The cash was the bonus but we could do without the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our success impacted another person's life."

Last week, the trust revealed it had rescued several local spots in that region, by bringing them into community ownership.

The first in that area and The Croft in Bristol were purchased under the public acquisition initiative, which is supported by Arts Council England and enthusiasts who purchase "ownership units" in the venues.
