Sir Keir is experiencing backbench anger after ministers dropped proposals to give workers day-one protection against wrongful termination, a U-turn that breaches the party's election pledges.
MPs including an ex-government official who led the worker protection legislation expressed apprehension regarding the retreat revealed by the administration.
Ministers have axed the proposal to scrap the 24-month eligibility timeframe for workers to make an unfair dismissal claim and enable them to proceed starting immediately in a new job, to try to get the proposed law through government.
The legislation became trapped in a confrontation among upper and lower chambers over the original plan to offer labor protections on day one, along with provisions to prohibit abusive casual work agreements.
The government now intends to establish the protection over unfair dismissal following half a year employment instead, while other day-one rights to paternity leave and sick pay continue planned to move forward, coming into effect in April 2026.
The Labour MP for the northeastern constituency labeled the action as a "utter breach of trust" and pledged to advocate for its reversal.
"We cannot support that compromise solution."
"This is a wrong-headed move and I plan to fight to overturn this compromise."
Another Labour MP expressed frustration about the lack of consultation, observing: "There has been absence of dialogue with party members. The Lords don't have primacy concerning campaign pledges, hence what prompted our让"
Another representative remarked: "Businesses should not worry from day-one rights, however laborers face significant risks from companies who resists first-day entitlements."
The previous work and pensions official affirmed that the decision "definitely is a broken promise."
The learning department head stated remained a "substantial likelihood" the enactment of the labor reform proposal might have faced postponement without the cabinet's decision regarding a change regarding first-day rights against unjust firing.
"Consultation has occurred on the point around unjust firing and the duration requirement among companies, labor organizations and government, and after those talks understanding has been reached about the way forward, that represents positive development."
The minister stressed that "This indicates the eligibility timeframe will decrease from 730 days to 180 days, and that runs alongside important day-one rights around sick pay and concerning childbirth absence."
"However the danger present had advancement not occurred, those important rights wouldn't come into force beginning second quarter 2026."
Following inquiry concerning whether it represented an unfulfilled pledge, the official replied: "In the manifesto, our commitment stated was that we would work with trade unions, with employers, with community groups, in consulting on such entitlements that we'd be bringing forward."
"Consequently, dual elements remain to that, within the manifesto, the crucial protections and the discussion process."
