In the early hours of Saturday, reports emerged of major blasts shaking Tehran, amid statements from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preventative strike.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were heard in Tehran on Saturday. Simultaneously, two plumes of thick smoke were seen billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially provide additional information.
Context: Rising Tensions and Prior Events
The incident takes place against a background of severely escalated strains in the Middle East. Key developments preceding this strike involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the region, featuring the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent discussions between the US and Iran on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with indications of more talks scheduled.
- Public Statements: Before the strike, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued threats regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. They rejected claims about weapons development and protest deaths as unfounded.
The situation remains fast-moving, with further updates anticipated as events unfold.
